Crypto Risk Management: Position Sizing and Survival Rules

Here’s the uncomfortable truth about crypto trading: most people don’t lose because they pick the wrong coins. They lose because they bet too much, hold too long, and have no plan for being wrong. Risk management is the entire edge.

Rule 1: Position sizing comes first

Before asking “what should I buy,” decide how much you can lose. The standard framework:

  • Risk 1–2% of your portfolio per trade. If you have $10,000, a single trade should risk $100–$200 — meaning your stop-loss, not your entry size, defines the position.
  • No single position above 5–10% of your total crypto allocation, no matter how certain you feel. Certainty is the most expensive emotion in markets.
  • Altcoin positions smaller than Bitcoin positions. Volatility scales with market cap; size down accordingly.

Rule 2: Every trade needs an exit before entry

A trade without a predefined stop-loss is a hope, not a plan. Decide in advance:

  • The invalidation level — the price at which your thesis is wrong. Place the stop there, not at a round number that “feels” safe.
  • The profit target — at least 2:1 reward-to-risk. Risking $200 to make $100 is a losing game even with a 60% win rate.
  • Time stops — if a trade hasn’t worked within your expected timeframe, exit. Dead money is a hidden loss.

Rule 3: Portfolio-level limits

  • Total crypto exposure should be money you can afford to lose completely. For most people that’s 5–15% of net worth, not their life savings.
  • Stablecoin reserves. Keep 20–30% of your crypto portfolio in stablecoins during uncertain markets. Dry powder is a position.
  • Leverage is optional — usually skip it. The $774 million in liquidations during October’s selloff was overwhelmingly leveraged longs. Spot positions can’t be liquidated.

Rule 4: The psychological rules

  • Never add to a losing leveraged position. Averaging down works for spot; it kills leveraged accounts.
  • Take profits mechanically. Sell tranches at predefined targets (25% at 2x, 25% at 3x, let the rest run). Don’t renegotiate with yourself mid-rally.
  • Separate trading capital from long-term holdings. Cold-storage Bitcoin you never touch; a smaller active stack you trade. Mixing the two leads to panic-selling the wrong pile.
  • Log every trade. Entry, exit, thesis, outcome. Your journal will teach you more than any course.

Rule 5: Security is risk management too

All the position sizing in the world means nothing if your funds get stolen. Hardware wallet for size, reputable exchanges only, two-factor authentication everywhere, and never — ever — share a seed phrase. Exchange hacks and phishing remain the top causes of total loss.

The bottom line

Crypto will give you 10x opportunities and 90% drawdowns, sometimes in the same year. The traders who survive both aren’t the smartest — they’re the ones whose risk rules kept them in the game long enough for the math to work.
